TAWAU, Dec 2 (Bernama) — A total of nine houses at a water village in Kurnia Jaya, Batu 4, here, were razed in a fire early this morning, however, no casualties were reported.
Quick action by fire and rescue team in controlling the blaze helped prevent the fire from spreading to about 471 other homes in the village.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Department chief Rudy Fredzek said the department received a distress call at about 4.06 am and reached the scene about 10 minutes later.
“Three engines and 23 members were rushed to the scene and together with police personnel, Civil Defence department and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd staff the fire was brought under control at about 5.03 am,” he said in a statement here today.
According to him the cause of fire and losses incurred were being investigated.
A victim, Norianah Rahul, 28, said when the fire broke out she and nine other family members were asleep.
“I was awakened by screams of fire from one the residents here and my family immediately escaped on a boat available under the house,” said Norianah who has been a resident there for the past 20 years.
