Man burns alcoholic wife to death

DHANGADI: A man burned his wife to death after he was ‘fed-up’ of her drinking habit at Joshipur VDC in Kailali on Sunday night.
Mahendra Prasad Kathaliya of the VDC set his wife Mira, 33 ablaze. Police arrested Mahendra from his house on Monday morning.
Mahendra has confessed his crime saying he was fed up with his wife’s drunk behaviour and hence murdered her.
“Mira had come home after consuming excessive alcohol from the local market and she collapsed on the yard as she could not control herself,” he said to the police, adding, “I could not bear to see that so I collected some straw, spread kerosene on her body and lit a fire.”
Mahendra said his family and house were ruined as a result of his wife’s drinking habit. “I convinced her time and again to give-up drinking, but she wouldn’t listen and her drinking frequency had increased,” he added.
According to his neighbours, the couple had fights almost daily under the influence of alcohol.
The villagers had informed police after they saw a fire at Mahendra’s house.
A police team deployed from Area Police Office, Joshipur and Bhajani had reached the spot to rescue Mira, but she had already died. The body was taken to Tikapur Hospital for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, DSP Bishworaj Khadka of District Police Office, Kailali said Mahendra was in custody and investigation into the incident was under way.
The couple’s four children have become helpless after their mother was murdered and father kept in custody.
They have been living in their relative’s house after the incident.
