Elderly Couple Burnt To Death In Fire

ALOR SETAR, Jan 23 (Bernama) — An elderly couple were burnt to death in a fire involving four shophouses in Kampung Dara Sungai Tawar, Baling at midnight last night.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Chief of Operations and Stations Management Branch, Senior Fire Superintendent II Mohd Firdaus Daud said the bodies of Toh Hock Lim, 81, and Soh Moi, 75, were found at the shophouse at around 5am.
“Of the four Class-B shophouses, one was used as a shop and the other three were used as residences. The estimated burnt area was 200ft by 60ft,” he told Bernama.
He said three cars, a jeep, and a motorcycle were also destroyed in the blaze.
He explained that all the other five inhabitants managed to save themselves during the incident.
He said the fire department received a call at 2.48am before despatching two fire-engines and 14 personnel to the site.
Firemen, who arrived at the scene around twenty minutes later managed to douse the flames completely by 3.43am.
The operation was handled by the Kulim Hi-Tech Fire and Rescue Department and was helped by the department’s personnel from Sik.
The victims’ bodies were taken to Baling Hospital before being sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here for post-mortem.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated whereas the loss was estimated at around RM200,000.
