SINGAPORE: A fire – involving three vehicles – broke out in a car park at Toa Payoh Lorong 1 early on Saturday (Jan 24) morning.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the fire at around 3am on Saturday. The fire, believed to have been started from one of the vehicles, was put out within 10 minutes after SCDF officers arrived at the scene. It added that no one was hurt.
An eyewitness, Miss Andrea Lek, told Channel NewsAsia she was sitting by the pool of her condominium, located behind the car park, when she heard two to three explosions.
She decided to go closer to find out what had happened. “We saw the embers and noticed it was a blazing fire.” Miss Lek then called the police. “There were about another six to seven explosions. The SCDF and police got there within 10 minutes,” she added.
Miss Lek noted that there were “quite a few” car owners who asked the police what had happened and if their cars were affected.
When Channel NewsAsia visited the scene on Saturday evening, there was a smell in the air, likely to be from burnt tyres.
Mr Daryl Tan, whose car was parked next to those affected, was “shocked” to find out about the incident. He had not known about the fire until he visited the car park on Saturday evening.
“I was shocked. I came here and saw the black ceiling,” said Mr Tan, who usually parks his vehicle in the same few lots. “Thankfully, there is only ash on my car – nothing happened to my car. I didn’t know such a big fire occurred here.
