Predawn fire destroys 50 houses in Cainta

Updated: 2012-05-29-07:31

Several families were rendered homeless after a predawn fire razed 50 houses in a residential area in Cainta town in Rizal province Thursday, the second-to-the-last day of Fire Prevention Month.

No one was initially reported injured in the fire that hit the area on West Bank Road at the Floodway area in San Andres village, radio dzBB’s Roland Bola reported.

Most of the houses in the area were made of light materials and caught fire quickly, the report said.

Initial investigation showed the fire started at 2 a.m., and reached the second alarm. Firefighters had a hard time navigating narrow pathways in the area.

The fire was put out at 6:35 a.m., volunteer group TXTFire said.

For their part, many panicked residents stayed at the side of the road, some trying in vain to save their belongings.

500 families in QC spend homeless night

Meanwhile, some 500 families in Quezon City spent Wednesday night without a home after a fire destroyed 200 houses in the city’s Tatalon district Wednesday.

Two people were reported hurt in the fire, which had reached Task Force Alpha before it was eventually put out Wednesday afternoon.

As of early Thursday, some 380 of the affected families spent the night at a covered court converted into an evacuation center, radio dzBB’s Allan Gatus reported.

But some families spent the night on the street, sleeping on carton boards. –KG, GMA News
