Three of family burnt to death
Updated: 2015-01-30 21:25

KAVRE: Three members of a family were charred to death when a fire broke out in their house at Sunthan Nagchaur of Panauti Municipality, Kavre, yesterday night.

The deceased have been identified as Binod KC, 35, his wife Bhagirathi,32 and their son Bipin, 8.

The blaze started at around 1am, according to SP Puja Singh. According to preliminary investigation, the fire could have started from an iron pot in which coal was burning to keep the room warm.

Police suspect Binod and his family could have lost consciousness due to suffocation, hence they could not come out of the house on time or shout for help.

A neighbour said that a cow belonging to the family had given birth to a calf yesterday and that they had made fire to keep the newborn calf warm.

Astalal Shrestha, a neighbour, said he woke up after he heard fire crackling in the neighbourhood. “When I went out, I saw KC’s house in smoke and flame,” Shrestha said, adding he then called others for help.

Locals then informed the police.

A police team led by Inspector Dipak Bharati, backed by locals, managed to douse the fire. Inspector Bhattarai said dried corn cobs could have helped the fire spread rapidly.

Binod had been working as an electrician at Kathmandu University for the last 14 years. His son Bipin was second grader at Namobuddha Higher Secondary School at Sankhutte.

The newborn calf too was burnt to death.
