Burning truck halts Pune-Mumbai expressway traffic
Updated: 2015-02-08-23:58
Vehicular traffic on the Pune-Mumbai expressway was held up for two hours on Sunday after a truck travelling towards Pune caught fire at the Khandala exit at 2am.
No one sustained injuries. The truck, which was on its way to Parbhani from Mumbai, was carrying purses, bags and other material. The vehicle and all its contents were completely destroyed in the fire, said Lonavla city police.
A Lonavla police team rushed to the spot immediately. “We also alerted the fire brigade of Lonavla Municipal Council,” said an officer from the Lonavla city police station. The driver Muhammad Ali (36) of Parbhani and the cleaner escaped unhurt.
They jumped out after noticing the fire after steering the truck to the service lane of the expressway. “A short circuit may be the cause of the blaze,” the officer said. Police had to stop the traffic heading towards Pune.
Traffic resumed around 4.30am after the truck was moved from the expressway, he said.
