RAJBIRAJ: The charred body of newly married Sarita Sahani, 19, was found at Choharwa, Golbazaar, according to District Police Office, Siraha.

“We cannot exactly say if it was a suicide or murder by just looking at the body,” said SP Ram Kripal Sah.

Sarita of Siraha Municipality-4 had tied the knot with Sitaram Sahani of Golbazaar two months ago. Sarita’s neighbours said the Sahani family had been meting out physical and mental torture to her since the day she was married for not bringing a motorbike as dowry.

Neighbours said Sitaram had beaten Sarita mercilessly over the dowry issue last Friday. That day, some people from Sarita’s parental home had come to settle the issue. “However, Sitaram had sent them away saying they would resolve their internal matters themselves,” a neighbour said.

According to locals, Sitaram’s family had demanded a motorbike during the wedding. Sarita’s family had married her off pledging to provide the bike later. A local said, a fire was seen inside a room of Sahani’s house at 11:00 am today, following which Sitaram and his parents fled, saying Sarita had set herself on fire.

Preliminary investigation showed that kerosene was sprinkled over Sarita’s body before she was set on fire, said Inspector Santosh Niraula. The charred body was found inside the room. Police have launched an investigation to unravel whether it was murder or suicide.

The body has been taken to Ram Kumar Sharada Umaprasad Murarka Memorial Hospital Lahan for post-mortem.

After the incident, Sarita’ husband Sitaram, his elder brother Raja and parents have been at large. Raja’s wife expressed ignorance as she had gone to feed the livestock when the incident occurred.

SP Sah said a manhunt had been launched to nab the absconding Sahani family. “The facts will come out after investigation,” said Sah.
