GEORGE TOWN, Feb 13 (Bernama) — A motor service and tyre shop at Taman Desa Permai Indah, Jalan Sungai Dua here, was destroyed in an early morning fire today.
Shop owner, Zakaria Yajid, (rpt: Yajid) 44, said the fire broke out about 2.15 am while he and his three children, aged between 11 and 18, were sleeping in their bedrooms on the top floor of the two-storey building.
He said a neighbour woke him up by throwing stones at his bedroom window panes.
“When I awoke, I felt the heat and the fire was spreading,” he added.
He said his shop, which he rented since 1996, was completely destroyed in the fire.
The fire also destroyed 13 vehicles at the shop, comprising three Honda CRV, a mini, a Perodua Myvi car, a Perodua Kancil car, a Proton Iswara car, a Proton Satria car, a Ford Laser car, a van and three motorcycles, he added.
Zakaria estimated his losses at RM700,000.
Meanwhile, a spokesman at the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue station said 20 firemen in four engines rushed to the scene and they took almost half and hour to control the fire.
