A gas leak in an underground boiler room at a hotel in North Gyeongsang province left one person dead and six injured on Saturday afteroon.

Carbon dioxide leaked through the fire extinguishing system at Kolon Hotel in Madong, Gyeongju city.

A construction worker identified only by his surname Park, 45, was pronounced dead due to asphyxiation as he was being transferred to the hospital.

Six other workers, including a 38-year-old man surnamed Kim, are receiving treatment for their injuries.

Firefighters have confirmed that among the injured men, a 39-year-old man surnamed Choi was one of the repair workers sent to fix the gas leak, Yonhap News Agency reported.

“We were in the middle of removing the insulator, when the fire alarm went off, and carbon dioxide started leaking through the fire extinguishing system,” one of the construction workers was quoted as saying.

Police confirmed there had been no fire.

Approximately 60 guests staying at the hotel escaped the building, and officials are investigating what caused the fire alarm to go off.
