SEREMBAN, Feb 19 (Bernama) — Four construction workers were hurt, two critically, when they fell from the fourth floor of an eight-storey building still under construction, here, Thursday evening.

Seremban 2 Fire and Rescue Department chief operation officer, Md Zin Salleh said seven firemen and a fire engine were deployed to the scene that was situated near the Seremban KPJ Specialist Hospital, after receiving an emergency call at 5.15pm.

“Upon arrival, we were informed that all the victims were sent to the hospital. It is learnt that they fell after the platform they were walking on, tilted sideways,” he said when contacted by BERNAMA.

Md Zin said the two critically injured victims had been sent to the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban, for treatment.

“Two other victims were sent to the Seremban KPJ Specialist Hospital,” he added.

In another case, a single mother’s preparations for the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration were destroyed by fire that almost completely gutted her house early in the day.

Yew Siew Siam, 50, a clerk, at the Pedas Plus Toll Plaza, said fire broke out at her house in Lorong 4 2/3, Taman Bukit Kepayang, near here, at about 4.55am.

“I am now staying with my sister in Pedas. After the fire which also destroyed my car, I am not in the mood to celebrate the Chinese New Year,” she said when contacted.

Yew, who stayed alone in the double-storey terrace house, said she woke up immediately after smelling of something burning.

“I went down to check and found the groundfloor, especially the living room, in flames. I rushed back upstairs to save myself and went out through the window and balcony that is connected to my neighbour’s balcony to seek help.

“Until now, I don’t know what had caused the fire but I am grateful to have escaped the fire,” she said.

Seremban 2 Fire and Rescue Station operations chief, Badrol Tamam Abd Rahim said 12 firemen in two fire-engines rushed to the scene of the fire after receiving a distress call.

“The blaze was put under control at 5.16am and doused completely by 7.03am. The groundfloor of the house was 60 per cent ruined and upstairs, it was 30 per cent destroyed. The victim’s Honda City car was also destroyed,” he said.

The cause of the fire and value of losses were being investigated, he added.
