Four Warehouses Storing Toxic Waste In Sendayan On Fire
Updated: 2015-02-27 13:30

SEREMBAN, Feb 27 (Bernama) — Four warehouses storing toxic waste at the Kualiti Alam’s Integrated Scheduled Waste Management Centre, near here, caught fire at 1.30pm, today.

The fire, in Bukit Nanas, resulted in heavy black smoke engulfing the area.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said no loss of life was reported as the mishap occurred during lunch break and the majority of the 250 workers were out either to have lunch or to perform Friday prayer.

“The firefighters managed to put the blaze under control within two hours. At the initial stage, several small explosions were heard, but by using water and foam, the team managed to prevent the fire from spreading,” he told a press conference here today.

He said three of the warehouses went up in flames, while the other one managed to be saved.

Norazam said the department rushed four fire engines and 65 firemen from the Seremban, Telok Kemang and Seremban 2 Fire and Rescue Stations to the location after receiving the distress call at 1.41pm.

Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) and the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) were also rushed to the scene, he said.

Meanwhile, Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Khalid Bahsoon in a statement said the fire that started at the off-loading area of the centre, did not cause any major damage to the facility.

“The cause of the incident has yet to be determined and we are currently working closely with the Fire and Rescue Department, Department of Environment, Department of Occupational Safety and Health and the police to determine the cause of the fire.

“A full investigation is already under way,” he said.
