Updated: 2015-03-07-23:32
Five members of a family including four children were roasted alive when an accidental fire engulfed their semi-pucca house at village Jiagachhi under Baisi police station in Purnia district on Thursday.
The fire, which broke out from a kitchen in a thatched room, soon spread to the semi-pucca house where they were fast asleep and also engulfed three more houses in the neighbourhood, the SHO said.
Police said five members of a family were fast asleep when the fire broke out in the kitchen and soon engulfed the room where they were sleeping. Though it was a pucca room, the roof was, however, made of tins and thatched materials, police said. Aided by a westerly wind, it spread to three more thatched houses, police added.
Those who were burned included Ameena Khatoon, 40, Safali Khatoon, 13, Baisazul, 11, Shailza, 9, and Shaiduli, 5, the SHO said. Baisi SDO Sunil Kumar, talking to TOI on Saturday, said all the affected families have so far been given Rs 7,700 each, besides one quintal of wheat and rice. The bereaved family will be extended further relief soon, he added.
In another incident, which marred the revelry of a family on the day of Holi, a 40-year-old man was seriously injured when a gun suddenly went off from the hands of his father at village Banaili under Kasba police station (PS) in Purnia on Friday evening. Rudra Narain Modi, who sustained serious injuries , has been shifted to PMCH, Kasba PS SHO Santosh Kumar Nirala told TOI on Saturday. Father Ram Narain Modi was doing something with his gun when it suddenly went off and hit his son, he said. “It was a licensed gun,” the SHO said.
In yet another incident, 32-year old Amit Kumar was shot at and injured following a spat between a small group at Mewalal Chowk under Maranga police station in Purnia town on the day of Holi on Friday, police said. Amit was admitted to sadar hospital.
Two persons-Rohit Kumar and Pappu Kumar- have been arrested in connection with the shootout following a spat among them, the SHO said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, strict security, in the wake of an ugly incident after last year’s Kali puja, ensured that the festival of colours passed off peacefully across Kishanganj district.
