JOHOR BAHARU, March 12 (Bernama) — Three people were burnt to death and three others were seriously injured when their car was involved in an accident and caught fire at Km168.7 of the North-South Expressway (south-bound) near the Tangkak toll plaza in Ledang today, police said.
Ledang Police chief Supt Mohamad Salleh Abd Razak said the incident occurred at about 7 am when they were travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baharu in a Kia Spectra car.
“One of the dead was Kalidasan Gurbachan Singh, 22, from Bandar Baru Puchong, Selangor, while the two others had yet to be identified,” he said when contacted.
Mohamad Salleh said the injured victims were women and they were K. Sarmila, 22, Suvathavanu, 18, and one person known only as Padisan.
He said initial investigation showed that the car carrying the six, aged between 17 and 22, rammed the rear of a heavy vehicle, skidded to the left and caught fire.
He said the bodies of the dead were taken to the Tangkak Hospital while the injured were rushed to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar.
Mohamad Salleh said the police were trying to contact the families of the victims for verification and he appealed to eye-witnesses to come forward to assist the investigation.
Meanwhile, Tangkak Fire and Rescue chief Azhar Elmi Mustofa said a fire truck with six personnel rushed to the accident location after receiving a call at 7.13 am.
He said the firemen arrived to see the front section of the car ablaze and took 10 minutes to extinguish the fire.
“We found three bodies inside the car and three people on the side of the highway,” he said.
