At least 60 houses were destroyed while some P600,000 in property went up in smoke after a fire hit a residential area in Cebu City on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters had a hard time battling the blaze, which affected three sitios of Barangay Basak Pardo, GMA Cebu’s Bexmae Jumao-as reported.
Bureau of Fire Protection investigators are also looking into information that a child playing with matches or candles may have triggered the fire.
Classes at a nearby university were suspended to ensure the students’ safety, the report said.
According to the report, the fire started at about 9:50 a.m. in Sitio Bamboo Village and due to strong winds, it quickly spread to Sitio Upper Laguna and Sitio Ulap.
Residents in affected areas not accessible to fire trucks tried to gather water from wells and canals to help fight the fire.
Many of the residents said they were already at work but rushed home to save their belongings. Barangay health worker Concepcion Ramirez tried to save an image of a saint in her house.
An initial investigation showed the fire started at the house occupied by Sophia Valdizamo.
Arson investigators estimated 60 houses were destroyed while P600,000 in property went up in smoke.
The fire reached Task Force Alpha and was placed under control at 11 a.m.
