SIBU, March 23 (Bernama) — A government building situated at the old Fort Vyner site in Belaga was destroyed today in a fire believed to have started around 4 am.
A Fire and Rescue volunteer team with the help of police and members of the public failed to save the aged wooden building occupied by the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).
Belaga Police Station chief Sgt Major Ujang Dawit said the team finally managed to put out the fire two hours later.
There were no fatalities in the incident, he told Bernama when contacted.
Meanwhile, the SRB said the board’s Region II assistant controller, Christopher Chan Ah Man visited the scene upon being informed.
The building also used to house the office and mini studio of Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM)’s Kayan language section.
Fort Vyner was built in 1850 by the Kajang community led by Aman Tipung Tului on the orders of Rajah Brooke.
The fort built of Belian wood was demolished in 1965 to make way for the government building.
