PHIDIM: The inferno that gutted 35 houses in Fungling of Taplejung yesterday night has rendered 462 people of 118 families homeless.

Taplejung CDO Damaru Prasad Niraula said details of damage caused by the blaze were being collected. “The exact details are yet to come as we are in the process of recording the properties of all the victims,” Niraula said. He informed that the victims would be rehabilitated at the office of Taplejung Chapter of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), community buildings, and the DDC building for the time being.

Houses belonging to Khagendra Shrestha, Bharat Shrestha, Yubaraj Shrestha, Nilam Neupane, Buddhi Karki, Loknath Giri, Ramesh Paudel, Mukti Paudel, Dhan Kumar Paudel, Ramesh Gautam, Narayan Maden, Dambar Karki, Khagendra Timilsina, among others, were destroyed.

The fire has reduced the old building of Taplejung DDC, office of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Taplejung Chapter, Office of Local Peace Committee, People’s Agriculture Cooperative Institute and office of Redpanda Network into ashes.

Of the fire victims, a few are still half-conscious.

Rekha Shrestha of Fungling is yet to regain full consciousness. She had been running a photo studio at her home. Her husband Khagendra Shrestha was killed in an accident around one-and-half-year ago.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bamdev Gautam, who arrived at the incident site to take stock of the situation today, pledged to meet all the demands of fire victims.

The fire victims had demanded compensation for damaged property, loan at low interest rate for house construction and restarting business and education for their children.

Gautam assured that the government would do all possible to provide relief and loan for house construction and businesses. He, however, did not disclose when and how relief and compensation would be provided. The fire victims had put forth their demands in writing.
