SINGAPORE – Two workers died after a blaze broke out early Friday morning in the second floor unit of a building along Lorong 6 Geylang.

One of the workers who died in the fire was 22-year-old Mamun Abdullah. The newlywed from Bangladesh had started working in Singapore in January.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said firefighters had entered the unit with two water jets, and found two people lying motionless in one of the rooms. Paramedics immediately brought them out of the unit, and pronounced them dead at the scene.

In a statement, the SCDF said it received an alert about a fire at about 4am. Its firefighters arrived within five minutes, and saw black smoke coming out of the unit.

They extinguished the fire within 30 minutes.

Two men who suffered minor burns were brought to the Singapore General Hospital, while another man who sprained his right wrist was brought to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire.

In all, it deployed two fire engines, three Red Rhinos, three supporting vehicles, and three ambulances to the scene.

In December last year, a fire broke out at a the ground-floor unit of a three-storey shophouse at 35 Geylang Lorong 4, killing four foreign workers. It was Singapore’s worst fire in a decade.
