50 Houses Destroyed In Early Morning Fire In Semporna

SEMPORNA, April 4 (Bernama) — Fire destroyed another 50 houses in the water village of Kampung Bangau-Bangau here early Saturday, the second in 11 days.
Semporna Fire and rescue station head Fazizul Izam Borhan said an engine with nine firemen went to the scene after receiving a distress call at 1.47 am.
They were assisted by firemen from the Kunak station and five fire volunteers as well as the police, the Civil Defence Department and local residents, he said when contacted here.
Fazizul said the fire was completely doused at 5.55 am and the Fire Department was investigating the cause of the fire and losses incurred.
There was no report of a casualty, he added.
Fire broke out in the village last March 25, destroying 233 houses.
Meanwhile in KOTA KINABALU, 22 illegal immigrants, all Philippine nationals, were detained in an integrated operation conducted in the housing area of Telipok Fasa Satu yesterday.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief ACP M. Chandra said 10 of them tested positive for drug.
They were among 76 people inspected during the operation which also involved the Immigration Department, National Registration Department and the Civil Defence Department, he added.
