Truck with stolen chemicals, six other vehicles gutted

A truck that was seized carrying stolen chemicals from Maharashtra to Surat caught fire under suspicious circumstances near Bardoli police station on Tuesday. Six other vehicles were also reduced to ashes in the incident.
Sources said that a state vigilance team caught the truck coming from Navapur in Maharastra on Tuesday morning. It was going to Sachin GIDC near Surat and it was carrying 31 barrels of 14 different types of chemicals.
The driver, Phiroz Sheikh, and cleaner Jamir Sheikh was taken into custody and the truck was handed over to Bardoli police. However, before the Bardoli police could take its custody, it caught fire just outside the police station compound.
“As the fire was intense due to the chemicals, it took Bardoli fire officials more than 2 hours to douse the fire,” said a police. Six vehicles parked near the truck were also gutted in the fire. Inspector SM Sagar of Bardoli police station told TOI, “We have called a forensic team to find the cause of the fire. It looks suspicious.” tnn
