Boy, 4, dies in QC slum fire

A four-year-old boy died in a fire reportedly started by a man out to take revenge against his neighbors in a slum in Barangay Sangandaan, Quezon City yesterday.
Mark Kyle Balabes was trapped on the second floor of the house owned by Ronie Alarcon, 40, when a fire broke out on the first floor of the house just before noon, fire marshal Jesus Fernandez said.
Balabes’ mother was not able to get her son as she was taking a bath on the first floor of the shanty when the fire broke out, he said.
Neighbors beat up Alarcon as he tried to run away just after the fire broke out.
Fernandez said Alarcon was released from the police community precinct yesterday, four days after he was arrested on child abuse charges. He reportedly threatened his mother-in-law and neighbors that he would burn down their houses.
Alarcon denied the allegations, saying he was sleeping at his partner’s house, which was beside his, when the fire happened.
He was arrested and brought to the precinct on arson charges.
