12 sustain burns after fire at ONGC well
Updated: 2015-04-19-08:38

Twelve people sustained burn injuries when fire broke out at an under maintenance well of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) near Dihen village in Olpad taluka of Surat district. It is the same well where gas had started gushing out on Wednesday creating a scare among the locals. A critical maintenance team (CMT) took more than 40 hours to stop the gas from gushing out of the well’s valve. However, the flow of gas was not completely stemmed.

ONGC officials said that the accumulated gas caught fire and flames erupted up to 20 feet causing flash burns to 12 persons including seven CMT members. The others who were injured were crane operators and helpers. Sources said that the fire raged on even after five hours. Since the site is more than 1.5km away from human habitation, there is no danger to any person or property.
