Major fire in chemical unit in Dahej SEZ : Seven injured

A major fire following an explosion during the recovery process of solvent named Ethylene dichloride in one of the reactors in Meghmani Industries Limited located in Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Dahej some 25 km off Bharuch injured seven people. The fire started after midnight of Saturday and is still going on. Officials say, fire is under control and cooling of the plant is also undertaken at present.
According to the officials of Industrial safety and Health department (ISHD) of the state on the spot, the cause of fire is still unclear but explosion took place during recovery of Ethylene dichloride which is highly explosive.
“Once the explosion took place, it started fire and as unit is full of number of different types of solvents and agro intermediaries, the chain reaction was set in. This gutted the whole unit.” Said ND Waghela, official from ISHD .
“We are preparing the primary report and have asked the owners of the unit to present us the head count of all the employees. At present we are going with figure of seven injured.”
Services of 12 different units of fire brigade were taken to control the fire during whole night .The injured are being treated in Bharuch civil hospital where condition of two is stated to be serious, with more than 50 burn injuries.
The group has three units in this area. Two are in SEZ whereas third one is in GIDC Dahej.
