6L litres of water used to douse fire in Ahmedabad’s Lati Bazar

The fire which broke out at warehouse containing logs in Lati Bazar in Vasna on Wednesday morning spelled trouble for the fire fighters as they had to use about six lakh litres of water to bring the fire under control. The fire which flared at 10.30am in the morning continued to rage till 4pm in the evening.

Sources in the fire department said they had to press in 10 tankers with 10 thousand litres capacity each. “Each tanker had to ferry water from far away filling stations at Danapith, Jamalpur and Memnagar fire stations four to five times each. We had two Gajraj vehicles each having a capacity of forty thousand liters each,” said additional chief fire officer Rajesh Bhatt.

Fire department received a call at 10.30am on Wednesday stating that a major fire at a 25-year-old warehouse near Pritamnagar Gate. The warehouse is owned by one Visan Mistry.

“As the warehouse contained wooden logs, the fire spread rapidly threatening to engulf adjoining shops and even a few residential houses behind the warehouse,” said a source from the fire department.

Adjoining shops were vacated and even the traffic passing through Vasna to APMC Market was halted for a few hours, a precautionary measure.

“Firemen had difficulty in containing the fire as the tankers had to go for refilling at Jamalpur, Danapith and Memnagar fire stations which consumed lot of time. By the time tankers returned the flames flared up again,” added Bhatt.

Fire department officials said with the help of ten tankers, and two Gajrajs and four fire fighters they were able bring the fire under control at about 4pm in the evening. Police had to use mild force to disperse the crowd which had gathered at the spot. “Even an MLA, who had rushed to the spot was man handled by the cops. Later cops realizing his status tendered an apology to the MLA,” said a source.
