GEORGE TOWN, May 9 (Bernama) — A single mother and her three children were left homeless after their house was destroyed in a fire at Kampung Telok Tempoyak, Batu Maung near here, early Saturday.
Sapiah Wan Chek, 46, said five of her neighbours’ motorcycles parked under her parents’ legacy home were also destroyed in the 1.40 am incident.
She said the fire was believed to have originated from a mosquito repellant coil which eventually struck an electrical fuse located in her daughter’s bedroom.
“The fire started from my daughter’s bedroom on the second floor. She woke up after feeling the heat of the fire and quickly came down. At the time I had not slept yet,” she told reporters when met at tge scene.
Sapiah, who works at a coffee factory in Bayan Lepas, said by the time the family got out of the house, the fire had raged, even reaching a mango tree and the roof of a bus stop located beside the house.
She said the fire also destroyed exam preparation materials of two of her children, Nurul Anatsha Zilhisham, 15, and Mohd Zulhilmi Zulhisham, 17, who would be sitting for the PT3 and Sijiil Pelajaran Malaysia respectively.
Meanwhile, Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Mohd Rohizat Yusof said the fire was doused at 2 am.
“The wooden house was 90 per cent destroyed with only a few remaining cement structures, however, our personnel were able to remove the partially burnt Perodua Kancil car,” he said.
