In a fire that broke out at a computer training institute in E block of Rajajipuram colony, seven students were injured including two who were rushed to the hospital on Saturday. A student who witnessed the incident Shiv Patel said, “It was pitch dark and as we tried to escape we could not open the door on the ground floor as a lot of people were trying to rush out at the same time. It became difficult to breathe as smoke had filled the entire floor.”
Students were in the grip of panic as flames rose and almost 25 of them were trapped inside the building.
Later, students protested at the local police station demanding action against coaching owner R K Srivastava. In charge of the online examination centre said, “The fire was triggered by about a 100 computer systems switched on at the same time.”
The group of students had collected at the centre since 9am to appear for an online examination. Sparks led to fire in the wiring of a computer system and switchboard. Within a few moments it spread further and flames caught the highly combustible material kept at FIS coaching centre around 10am. Within minutes the fire had spread to the entire portion on the ground floor. The computer systems and furniture of the centre was gutted completely in the incident.
Passersby noticed smoke bellowing out of the window and called fire service. Five fire-tenders were rushed to the spot to control the conflagration and rescue the children.
Station officer of Talkatora police station Indrapal Singh said, “With support of firefighters all students were brought out to safety.”
