LANGKAWI, May 20 (Bernama) — A disabled couple was left homeless after their house in Kampung Padang Gaung, here, was destroyed in a fire Wednesday.
Forty-year-old deaf and mute Radziah Che Mat, who was with her mother, Che Su Ismail, 72, at the time, escaped unhurt in the fire that broke out at about 2pm, but not without seeing her sewing machines, fabrics and clothes belonging to her customers going up in smoke.
A neighbour told reporters that Radziah, who was only able to communicate via sign language, had been a home-based tailor for the last 25 years and the clothes were for her customers to wear for the coming Aidilfitri celebration.
Her husband, Hazli Hashim, 42, also a deaf and mute, was not at home during the incident.
Eighteen firemen from the Langkawi Fire Station led by Senior Fire and Rescue Superintendent II Sahriel Nizam Kamari took about five minutes to douse the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a short circuit.
