Updated: 2015-06-07-02:19

Over 100 huts in the slums near railway line at Indrapuri under Pataliputra police station area were reduced to ashes in a devastating fire on Saturday afternoon. Approximately 20 LPG gas cylinders exploded one after another in the fire. However, there was no casualty reported.

Police suspect the first spark came from a hut’s kitchen and it turned into a massive fire and spread to adjoining huts. Hundreds of people lost their savings and valuables but managed to save their lives. Some rickshaws and carts of the residents were also gutted in the fire affecting their owners’ livelihood. Most of the residents belong to workers’ class.

Three fire tenders, two from Lodipur and one from Sachivalaya fire stations, reached the spot to extinguish the fire. The locals said a private bike servicing centre in the area also suffered huge loss as three bikes and a scooter also caught fire. Sahil Mohamad, a local, also lost his meat shop in the fire, sources said.

Police, however, said, “Around 15-20 huts caught fire and there were no LPG gas cylinder in the huts. People got confused due to the noise of bamboo blast. A few ward councillors also reached the spot and made a few basic arrangements for the victims.
