Forest Fire: 3.5 Hectares Of Peatland In Kampung Tok Kah Dungun Destroyed
Updated: 2015-06-09 12:00
DUNGUN, June 9 (Bernama) — A week-long hot and dry weather has contributed to the destruction of about 3.5 hectares of peatland forest in Kampung Tok Kah, near here.
Dungun Fire and Rescue assistant superintendent, Amri Mohd said the fire was believed to have started by some residents who were careless while clearing their gardens and oil palm fields.
According to Amri, fire fighters have succeeded in extinguishing the fire over 2 hectares of forest and would continue with their task until the fire is fully extinguished.
“We encountered problems in fighting the fire because the hot weather and strong winds caused the fire to spread very quickly.
“Furthermore the combustible nature of the peat soil made the underground fire more difficult to control,” he told Bernama when contacted here today.
Amri said the fire fighters also detected some new patches and for now they were taking preventive measure by making blockades to control the fire from spreading to other areas.
“We had to change our approach as the drain water is too shallow for the generator pump to suck in and available water resource is too far from the scene,” he said.
