Updated: 2015-06-13-10:45
A chief cook was injured in a fire that hit an iconic canteen of the University of the Philippines’ Diliman campus in Quezon City Saturday morning.
The fire occurred at CASAA Food Center along Fernandez Street at the back of the campus’ Palma Hall, radio dzBB’s Manny Vargas reported.
CASAA Food Center had been popular among generations of UP students.
The fire reached the third alarm as of 10:23 a.m.
Photos posted by Vargas showed the fire destroying several parts of the canteen.
On Saturday afternoon, a post on the UP Diliman’s Facebook page indicated two people were treated for injuries, adding a leak in a liquefied petroleum gas tank caused the fire.
It said the fire broke out at 9:45 a.m. and was put out by the members of the Quezon City Fire Department by 10:27 a.m.
Chancellor Michael Tan commended the administration and staff of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the UP Diliman Police, those under the Chief Security Office and the QC Fire Department for their rapid response.
Tan said such response allowed them to put the fire under control in less than an hour.
“Despite today being a non-working day, they were all on alert and put UP Diliman’s fire preparedness system into full gear,” he said.
