In a freak fire mishap reported at a fireman’s house in Balkum, his mother and brother suffered burn injuries and had to be admitted to the hospital. The fire was reportedly triggered by a short circuit and the two suffered injuries while trying to douse it.
The lady Nanda Raghunath Bhoir (50) has been admitted to the civil hospital with near 90 per cent burns while her son Rupesh (27) has been sent to a local hospital near Manpada. Nanda’s condition is said to be critical. Bhoir’s elder son Sandesh is deputed as a fireman at the Balkum fire office and was at work during the time of the incident.
Balkum fire officials said that the fire must have been triggered by a short circuit in a wall-hung fan and spread to the sofa kept under the fan. Bhoir rushed to douse the flames not realizing that she was wearing synthetic clothes that immediately caught fire.
Hearing her screams, Rupesh rushed to the spot and injured himself too. Meanwhile, neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued the two after which they alerted the fire officials.
Initial reports indicated that the fire was caused by a gas leak but senior officials at the Balkum fire office claimed the LPG cylinder was intact. “We will try to speak to the injured to know the exact cause,” said S Jhalke of Balkum fire brigade.
