KOTA KINABALU, June 15 (Bernama) — Fire razed up to 64 houses in Kampung Pondo, Pulau Gaya here, early Monday, and police believe it was caused by the explosion of a bottle containing petrol.
Kota Kinabalu Police chief ACP M. Chandra said a preliminary investigation showed that the bottle had been placed near the stove of a house that also caught fire.
“It is estimated that 64 houses caught fire and an eight-year-old girl was slightly injured in the head,” he said in a statement.
Chandra said an investigation was ongoing and the damage had yet to be ascertained.
Those who lost their houses were staying with relatives, he added.
Sabah Fire and Rescue public relations officer Mohd Affendi K. Ramin said 20 firemen were dispatched to the scene following a distress call at about 7 am.
“A fire department boat and three marine boats were used in the operation,” he told Bernama when contacted.
