Inferno in paradise: Fire hits four hectares of Boracay

A man tries to save some belongings as a raging fire hits the talipapa in Boracay Island on Wednesday afternoon, June 17. No one was reported hurt as of posting time.
Fire hit the public market in Boracay on Wednesday afternoon.
All the sections of the four-hectare public market were burned down. A few houses, apartments, and other establishments were also affected by the fire.
According to a report on GMA News TV’s News TV Live, the fire started in Talipapa Bukid Public Market in Sitio Manggayat, Barangay Manoc-Manoc at around 3 p.m.
Initial information from the Red Cross indicated five people suffered minor injuries.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
The razed stalls are considered a major supplier of affordable food, especially among tourists.
Investigation showed the fire started at the kitchen of a house of Marcelino Sotto. It was declared under control at 4:50 p.m.
Boracay’s land area is a little more than 1,000 hectares.
