Updated: 2015-06-23 12:00
GEORGE TOWN, June 23 (Bernama) — Two brothers carried their 94-year-old paralysed grandmother to safety as a fire destroyed their home in Kampung Baru Sungai Ara here Tuesday.
Hassan Al Hafiz Samsuri, 22, and Ahmad Musthofa, 21, ran to the room of their grandmother, Aminah Abdullah, on the upper floor of the double-storey house and carried her down the stairs as the fire engulfed the house and two adjacent houses at 11.20 am.
Hassan Al Hafiz said they were watching television in the living room downstairs when they heard an explosion at the house next door and quickly rushed out to check.
Upon learning that the neighbouring house was on fire and the blaze was spreading to theirs, the two men rushed upstairs to get their grandmother.
The fire destroyed their house and two adjacent houses, all of which were built partially of concrete and wood.
Hassan Al Hafiz, who lived with his parents, grandmother and three siblings, said they lost everything in the fire except the clothes on their backs.
He himself also lost books and money that he had kept to pursue higher education at the end of the month.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department senior officer Nazri Mustafa said the cause of the fire and damage were under investigation.
