Fire rages through shop/house, killing three

Fire destroyed a four-story shop/house on Jl. Karang Anyar in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, in the early hours of Saturday, killing three of the five residents inside the house and injuring the two others.
The fire, which broke out at 12:20 a.m., was allegedly triggered by an exploding car engine in the basement. Eighteen fire trucks from the West Jakarta and Central Jakarta fire fighter agency were deployed to extinguish the fire.
The officers managed to put out the flames by 1:25 a.m. but failed to save the house owner Andreo, 40, and two of his children: William, 8, and Wely, 10, who were trapped on the third floor.
Andreo’s wife, Tantri, and their third child Wehang, 3, survived but were injured when they jumped clear of the house from an upstairs room. They were rushed to Husada Hospital, while the remains of the three victims have been taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. (lfr)
