Fire Leaves 10 Families In The Lurch Ahead Of Aidilfitri Celebrations

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) — Ten families have been left with only the clothes on their backs after their homes in Kampung Chubadak Tambahan, Sentul, were razed to the ground today.
In the 4.38 pm incident, the squatter houses made of wood and stone could not be saved as there was no fire hydrant nearby.
Bernama reporters covering the incident spotted a pregnant woman holding a small pair of new shoes, once in a while seen trying to wipe off what seemed to be burn marks.
“I just bought these (shoes) yesterday, I wanted to give it to my son to wear for Hari Raya. I bought three pairs for him, but I only managed to save this one, even this looks like it can’t be worn,” said Haszura Huri.
She was among the 47 victims from 10 families left homeless, just three hours before the breaking-of-fast today.
Haszura, who is six months pregnant with her second child, said she managed to save nothing other than her 18 month old son’s pair of shoes in the fire.
“All the ‘raya’ goods my husband and I had bought yesterday, including the carpet I thought I would surprise my mother-in-law with, has been burned to ashes,” she said.
She said she had just returned home and was putting her son to sleep when she saw thick smoke, and immediately ran out with her son and mother-in-law to her sister’s place, adding that just five minutes later, the fire started raging and they could not salvage anything.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Operations Centre chief Samsol Maarif Saibani said more than 50 fire and rescue personnel from seven stations including volunteers, with seven fire engines and three water tankers were mobilised for the operation, which took almost two hours.
He said the fire could have been due to a short circuit in the kitchen of one of the houses, and then spread to the rest of the houses.
However, he said the most important thing was that there were no casualties.
