Girl, 8, killed in fire

An eight-year-old girl, who was left alone in the house, was killed in a fire past 10 p.m. Sunday in Barangay Uling, Naga City.
The remains of Leona Abatayo, a Grade 3 pupil, were later found by firefighters who responded to the alarm.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Generalao Ruseller said they received the report on the fire at 10:45 p.m. and immediately responded to the alarm.
But when the firefighters arrived, the house was already burned down. They then discovered a body among the debris that was later identified to be that of Abatayo.
Ruseller said the house was made of light materials and has no electric connection so the fire has probably been triggered by an unattended kerosene lamp or candle
Initial investigation revealed that the victim was alone in the house when the fire started because her older step brother, Jab Ibrahim Briones, left and went to another barangay.
Russeller said that when the candle was about to run out, the fire may have hit the coconut floor and burned the entire house, killing the girl.
He added that the girl’s parents are in the custody of Naga City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology after a case was filed against them.
