Religious School Razed, Three Students Injured

GUAR CHEMPEDAK, July 29 (Bernama) — Three students of the Raudhatut Tahfiz Religious School suffered burns when their dormitory at KM 2, Jalan Gunung Jerai here caught fire early Wednesday morning.

Muhammad Amir Shaharuddin, 10, and Ahmad Luqman Shuhaimi, 15, were treated at Yan Hospital before being transferred to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB), while Muhammad Hakim Ikhmal Iswan, 10, was given outpatient treatment at Hospital Yan.

Guar Chempedak Fire and Rescue department chief Safuwan Mohd Saad said the department received an emergency call at 3.06 am and two fire engines and 15 firefighters were rushed to the scene.

“On arrival about 80 per cent of the wooden building was already destroyed.

“The fire was brought under control at 3.44 am and was fully extinguished at 6.01 am. However, the cause of fire and estimated losses are being investigated,” he told Bernama.

According to Safuwan, Muhammad Amir and Ahmad Luqman suffered burns on the head, back up to the waist, hands and legs, while Muhammad Ikmal Hakim, suffered burns on both legs.

Meanwhile, a witness who is also a student of the school, Muhammad Aiman Mohd Abu Hashim, 15, said he woke up to see fire coming from the back of the building.

“Realising the building was on fire, I shouted out to my friends who were sound asleep to get out of the building. There was no time to save anything,” he said.

The dormitory which houses 44 boys of the religious schools is for temporary occupation before completion of a permanent building.

School supervisor, Zamri Ibrahim said the school with 80 students aged between seven to 17 years was previously operating from a rented premises in Gurun before moving here two months ago.
