Updated: 2015-09-11-10:19
Seven staffers, including an assistant engineer attached to KPTC sub-station in Hootagalli, were injured in a freak electrical accident at 10.15am on Thursday. They were hospitalized with burns, police said.
The accident occurred when the mechanics and engineer were jumping electrical lines at the hotline (live-line) working station, and huge flames broke out following contact between two high-voltage lines. The flames leapt over an area of 8ft and reached staff members who were standing with huge sticks used to change lines from one station to another.
Rangegowda, a grade 1 mechanic, suffered nearly 80% burns and is battling for life at a private hospital. Assistant engineer BS Sridhara received 30% burns, while mechanics Nataraju MB, D Dhananjaya, Govindegowda and Harish CM, and staffer Raju M, received minor burns and are said to be out of danger.
Mysuru transmission zone superintending engineer KL Balakrishna told TOI the incident happened when the staffers were carrying out regular work. The seven workers are experts at their job, but Thursday’s incident is unfortunate, he explained.
