Updated: 2015-09-15 12:00
KEMAMAN, Sept 15 (Bernama) — The Kerteh Airport in Kemaman has been closed to all flights as at 8 am Tuesday following the worsening haze condition in the district.
Petronas East Coast Region Communications and Media Relations manager Zamri Mohamad said the closure of the airport was carried out on the directive of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) after visibility dropped to below 800 metres.
“Notice of the airport’s temporary closure has been issued and all flights have been postponed until DCA confirms the situation has improved and is safe.
“At 8 am, the visibility at Kerteh Airport recorded by the Meteorological Department was 600 metres and it later fell to 400 metres at 10 am before worsening to only 300 metres at 5 pm,” he told reporters here Tuesday.
Zamri said the airport closure affected two commercial airlines operating at the airport namely Malindo Air and Firefly as well as the helicopter service which ferries oil and gas industry offshore crew to and fro the district.
