Fire at Coca Cola warehouse
Updated: 2015-09-25

A fire destroyed a warehouse leased by Coca-Cola in Mingalardon township yesterday.
A fire possibly caused by a burning mosquito coil yesterday destroyed a Coca-Cola warehouse in an industrial zone of Yangon’s Mingalardon township, with losses estimated at over K112.5 million, according to police.
Major Win Shwe, head of Mingalardon township police, said the unit had been operating until 9:30pm the night before and that the fire department did not believe it was caused by an electrical fault. “We think it could have been caused by a mosquito coil,” he said.
Ko Myo Min Aung, who lives near the industrial zone, said locals alerted the authorities when they saw smoke at about 6am. He said strong winds fanned the flames which gutted a one-storey building, impeding access for firefighters before it was extinguished around noon.
Fire services said they dispatched 45 fire engines and 415 fire fighters. The unit was said to have stored ingredients and materials for making Coca-Cola, including tins, plastic and bags of sugar.
A Coca-Cola Myanmar spokesperson said the fire was in a warehouse leased by Coca-Cola Pinya Beverages Myanmar. The company paid tribute to the local fire services and said no workers were injured.
“The Coca-Cola Company’s highest priority is the safety of its employees and we have been fully cooperative with local authorities in addressing the fire risks. We will work with the authorities over the coming days as they conduct further investigations,” the spokesperson said.
