Goods worth crores gutted in fire at Godhra

A major fire broke out at a scrapyard five km from Godhra railway station in Panchmahal district on Friday night.
Goods and vehicles worth crores were gutted in the fire that occurred due to a short circuit in Kothi Plastics. Fire fighters took nearly 15 hours to douse the fire, sources said.
“We were informed about the fire at around 11 pm by the security guard at the godown. Since it was holiday, the godown was shut and there were no employees. We have been operating the godown for the last five years,” said Firdosh Kothi, a relative of the company owner.
Kothi added that they immediately informed Godhra Nagarpalika authorities. Plastic waste, scrap paper and three trucks were damaged in the fire. Since the fire could not be controlled by Godhra Fire Brigade, fire fighters from Vadodara, Dahod, Lunawada, Sehra, Kalol and Halol had to be called.
Nearly 50 firemen worked to douse the fire. Locals staying in the vicinity of the scrapyard were evacuated by the fire fighters as a safety measure.
“It was an open ground with area ten times of Sursagar Lake. Our team of nine firemen worked for about eight hours. The materials were mainly petrochemical plastic scrap. The biggest hurdle for fire fighting was the thick smoke. However, the fire came under control by about 9 am,” said fire officer Manish Mod.
