Family home of 40 years destroyed by fire

Three members of a family were left with only the clothes on their backs in a fire which destroyed their house in Kampung Gutong.
Mazitah Harun, 57, said their wooden house, which had been the family home for 40 years, was completed razed in the fire which broke out about 9pm.
“The fire spread very fast and we had no time to salvage anything, including my two diamond rings, worth RM4,000 and three sewing machines,” said the seamstress.
She said the fire broke out while she and her youngest son, Wan Mohd Nazrin Wan Zahari, 15, were having dinner in the kitchen, while her husband, Wan Zahari Wan Mat, 64, a government retiree, was at a mosque.
“I realised the house on fire when I heard a loud explosion in the bedroom and when I went to check, saw fire spreading, and then left the house with my son through the back door,” she added.
Meanwhile, Pasir Puteh Fire and Rescue station chief, Assistant Superintendent Wan Baijuri Wan Hassan said six firemen from the station found the house almost completely razed when they arrived at the scene at 9.27pm.
However, they managed to prevent the fire from spreading to two nearby houses, he added.
He estimated losses in the fire at RM85,000 and that investigation was being carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
