Another Tianjin warehouse hit by blast
Updated: 2015-10-14 07:44
Two months after the deadly blasts in Tianjin, another warehouse storing chemicals caught fire and exploded in the municipality on Monday night.
The incident, which occurred in Xiditou township in Beichen district, caused no death or injuries, according to the Tianjin Information Office.
The 700 square meter warehouse is owned by local residents and is rented by Tianjin Yongsheng Chemical Co.
The company illegally stored ethyl alcohol, acetic acid, glycerin, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide without a license, according to the Beichen district publicity department.
The only poisonous gas that could be generated by the explosion is carbon monoxide, said Cui Jingheng, an expert on work safety who arrived at the scene after the explosion. Monitoring data by the district’s environmental protection bureau showed the concentration was 4 milligrams per cubic meter, below the national standard of 10 mg per cubic meter.
Zhou Qingji, the owner of the company, has been detained by the police, according to the Tianjin Municipal Public Security Bureau. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
The fire began at 9:46 pm on Monday and was put out at about 2:33 am on Tuesday.
Two months ago, on Aug 12, twin blasts rocked a warehouse storing hazardous chemicals and nearby buildings at Tianjin Port. The blasts claimed 173 lives, including 104 firefighters.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the cleanup of the Aug 12 blasts center is almost done, and monitoring data by the municipal environmental protection bureau showed that air and water quality outside the core zone is within national standards.
Deng Xiaowen, head of Tianjin Environmental Monitoring Center, said the water and soil quality in the core zone doesn’t yet meet the national standard and is still undergoing cleanup.
“The number still varies from day to day, and no time schedule can be given at this point,” Deng said.
The cause of those blasts is still under investigation. Under national regulations that govern work safety accidents, the results of an investigative report should be released to the public within 180 days after an accident.
Premier Li Keqiang pledged during a visit to the scene on Aug 16 that a thorough investigation into the fatal blasts would be completed, and he promised that those responsible would be punished.
Eleven officials are under investigation, and 12 people from Tianjin Ruihai International Logistics Co, the owner of the warehouse, and related companies have been detained.
Four people were killed and one critically injured when a warehouse in central China’s Hubei province caught fire on Aug 22. On Aug 26, one person was killed and nine others were injured after a blast at a chemical plant in eastern Shandong province.
