Thamrin Nine Tower catches fire
Updated: 2015-10-18 10:58
A fire broke out at the Thamrin Nine Tower construction site in Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta on Saturday.
Kompas.com reported that a witness, Irfan, claimed on Saturday that the fire was caused by welding activities at the site. A spark landed on polystyrene sheets and spread to a warehouse.
A Tanah Abang Police officer, First Insp. Agus Sujana, said there were no casualties. Six fire trucks were sent to the location.
“There were no casualties. We don’t know how much the losses are. The firemen worked quickly and put out the fire within 20 minutes,” Agus said as reported by kompas.com.
Black smoke was seen billowing from the site at 4.30 p.m. Construction workers tried to smother the fire with sand before the fire trucks arrived.
The Thamrin Nine complex is being developed by private construction company PT Putragaya Wahana, which is building what will be the tallest building in Jakarta with 71 floors at 330 meters high. It is scheduled for completion in 2018.
Fire also broke out in a karaoke center on the 14th floor of the Sarinah department store building in Central Jakarta on Friday. Two workers suffered burn injuries and hundreds of workers and visitors panicked.
