Updated: 2015-10-18-03:47
Over 25 crew members of a fishing trawler had a narrow escape after a fire broke out on their vessel sailing off the coast of Baina on Saturday.
It was 30 minutes before any help could reach them, but, no casualties were reported.
On Saturday morning, the fishing trawler owned by MMC ex-vice chairperson Jerry Fernandes had gone out to sea for fishing.
After crossing Bat Island off Baina beach, suddenly, a fire broke out in the engine room due to a short circuit. The fire started spreading and a portion of the trawler was caught in the blaze. The 25-member crew panicked and a couple of them jumped into the water.
Local MLA and power minister Milind Naik was alerted, and he informed the marine police. Fernandes, too, sent a trawler with two other trawlers also reaching the spot. The crew were rescued and the fire was put out. The trawler owner suffered a loss of 2lakh. The trawler was brought and anchored at Khariawada jetty.
