Fire breaks out at Bowbazar building in Kolkata

A fire broke out in a building on Bowbazar’s Prinsep Street, which houses some offices and godowns, gutting the entire second floor on Saturday. No casualty has been reported yet.
According to the police, tackling the blaze was even more difficult than usual as the approach road was too narrow and the fire engines had to be parked away from the spot. Though the police are yet to ascertain the exact reason, they said a short-circuit might have sparked off the blaze around 5pm. Seven fire engines took almost two hours to douse the flames. The disaster management authorities have launched an operation to check if anyone was still trapped inside. “We had problems tackling the fire as the approach road is narrow. The police cordoned off the area. Though it was a holiday, we were told a private office was open. But no one was found trapped inside. We are looking into the fire safety norms practised inside the building,” said a senior fire officer.
