Centenarian Dies In Lawas Fire

MIRI, Nov 1 (Bernama) — A centenarian was burnt to death after a fire broke out at her wooden house in Kampung Gelapas, Trusan Lawas in the Limbang Division at about 4am today.
Lawas Fire and Rescue chief Mohd Shamlie Radae said Tiamah Montol was trapped in her bedroom during the fire while her son Sulaiman@Alias Murah, in his 50s, suffered burns in the head.
“I understand her son tried to save her but the bedroom door was locked from inside,” he told Bernama.
He said the victim’s charred remains were recovered at 5.40am and handed over the police for follow-up action while her son had been admiited to the Lawas Hospital.
He added that two other family members in the house managed to escape to safety.
According to him, the fire also razed a neighbouring house but all the occupants managed to escape.
Mohd Shamlie said firemen arrived at the scene at 4.50am and managed to put out the blaze at 5.02am.
He said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
