Updated: 2015-10-29-22:00
The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam’s office in Nainital was engulfed by fire in the early hours of Thursday. The fire broke out due to a short circuit early morning around 4.30am which soon spread to other parts of the building.
The building located in Oak Park area of the lake city was charred as three fire tenders with more than a dozen men took above three hours to douse the flames. The estimated damage to the property was roughly calculated to be more than Rs 10 lakh. Some key documents relating to the tourism promotion agency were also destroyed in the fire.
“We are still estimating the damages. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident. An enquiry would be set up to look into the matter,” said Deepak Rawat, Nainital district magistrate. Assembly speaker Govind Singh Kunjwaal also visited the spot and said he hoped the damages would be repaired soon.
Officials said an alternate working space is also being hunted for the KMVN staff which includes the managing director. The fire scare spread across the area as locals rushed out of their houses to find out the reason for the commotion so early in the morning. After noticing sky-high flames embracing the building, emergency calls were made to the fire services.
