Woman, 87, hurt in Banilad fire

CEBU, Philippines – An 87-year-old woman was injured in a fire that destroyed seven houses and damaged two vehicles at midday yesterday in Sitio Baka, Barangay Apas, Cebu City.
Remedios Manapsal suffered burns in her face and arms for trying to save some of their belongings as the fire engulfed her house, where the blaze reportedly started.
Manapsal was taken by the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.
Chief Insp. William Tacaldo, Cebu City Fire Marshal, said they are still investigating the incident.
Initially, according to neighbors, the fire started at the room of Manapsal before it easily spread to nearby houses.
As of this writing, the fire bureau has yet to get the names of the owners of the other destroyed houses.
Aside from the seven houses, two vehicles – a Mitsubishi Adventure and a Volkswagen, were damaged. A pet dog was also hurt.
The Bureau of Fire and Protection received the alarm at 11:03 a.m. and was raised to third alarm. The fire was controlled around 11:22 a.m. and damage was pegged at P350,000.
Jasmine Sestoso, who rented a room at the place and employee of a mall nearby, said that she was on duty when her roommate informed her. Sestoso rushed to the scene but unfortunately she failed to save her belongings.
Tacaldo reminded the public to be cautious anytime to always unplug unused appliances especially cellular phones and ceiling fans.
“Magbantay ta kanunay labi na init ang panahon nga maka-contribute sad sa sunog,” Tacaldo said. (Let’s all be mindful of safety especially during this hot season.) — (FREEMAN)
